The LCIA owns & maintains approx. 125 rock/shoal buoys that are set out each year in the boating lanes of the Les Cheneaux Islands, marking hazards to navigation; employs inspectors who check members' properties in their absence twice a month from Sept. - May; sponsors water quality testing (for over 20 years) providing a baseline of data in an effort to monitor lake water quality for recreational use; promotes boating safety by sponsoring two youth boating safety certification classes each summer, adult refresher classes & vessel safety checks; contributes to water centric issues in the area in conjunction with the LC Watershed Council & to various township/community projects & programs.

The Les Cheneaux watershed is considered a subwatershed of the Carp-Pine Watershed located in Michigan’s Eastern Upper Peninsula. Specifically, the Les Cheneaux watershed is located in eastern Mackinac County with one subwatershed located in south-central Chippewa County. Watershed goals are based on combating pollution sources and causes in order to protect threatened designated uses of water. These goals are broad but declare the end product of eliminating the threats to designated uses.
