Considered by many to be one of the most beautiful buildings in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, and probably one of the most beautiful old school houses of its kind remaining in the entire country, the Hessel School House has been returned to serving its unique heritage.
Located in the quaint village of Hessel, it was a two-classroom facility for kindergarten through fifth grades. It served the native Chippewa Indians and decendents of the immigrant families that had settled there beginning in the 1850s.
The historic Hessel School House is available to rent for your social event or business function. The school's former auditorium-- now an expansive and gracious event space-- will comfortably seat 175 people with amenities such as a drop down screen for projected movies and slide shows. A projector, microphone, sound system and podium are available to enhance your business meeting, presentation or special event. If you are planning a wedding, shower, anniversary, birthday party or other social event or celebration, the venue offers round, rectangular or high-top cocktail tables, and padded folding chairs. Chiavari chairs are also an option, for an upgraded price.
The east classroom at the school house is also available for rent for art classes to small group presentations. The wall of east-facing windows in the classroom lets in wonderful, natural light throughout the daytime hours for painting, drawing and every other art form. A utility room adjacent to the classroom offers access to water and a sink, for cleaning up and getting started.
Tables and chairs are also included in the rental fees. Please contact the school for availability and fees.
The Hessel School House is pleased to host the Les Cheneaux Farmers & Artisans Market every Sunday, year-round, from 10 am to 2 pm. You will find seasonal produce and plants, meats, farm fresh eggs, breads, sweets, and a variety of arts and crafts-- all from Eastern Upper Peninsula vendors.
